Obituary of Gordon Gall
Please share a memory of Gordon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROCHESTER, NY – August 19, 2024 - US Army Veteran
Gordon was born in New York, New York on January 27, 1926. While not yet a year old, he was taken to Barbados to be raised by his maternal grandparents. He had dual citizenship as an American and as a citizen of Barbados.
His grandparents raised him as a Christian in the Church of England, attending church as a Presbyterian.
Gordon was a student at the St. Charles School for Boys, graduating at age 18. He was an avid reader, so while reading that the United States was calling all citizens to war, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and received an honorable discharge. He was discharged to the Geneva, New York army base. He then relocated to Rochester, New York. After living in Rochester for a number of years, Gordon decided to purchase a home. He chose the town of Greece and had a house built in a new tract. He was one of the first to build in 1961.
Searching for employment, he applied at Bausch and Lomb on St. Paul Street near where he lived. He gained employment with the company as a Lens Maker and moved up the ladder to become supervisor of the Optical Department. He was a dedicated employee for 45 years. He retired from Bausch and Lomb in 1992, and fully retired in 1997.
Gordon needed to be home to care for his first wife, Eleanor Gall, who passed away in 2000 after 45 years of marriage. Following her death, he began attending Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church where his stepdaughter, Marjorie Anderson, secretary of the church, attended. Marjorie was instrumental in having Gordon and his current wife, Merline P. Moore Gall, meet. Gordon asked her out to dinner and gradually their interest in each other grew. Having been widowed at age 46, and now age 62, Merline was open to a new relationship. The couple was married July 2, 2005.
Gordon’s health began to decline, and he had to be hospitalized. Following his release from the hospital, he was placed in the Latta Road Nursing Home for convalescence. During his five months there, his health further declined, and he succumbed to this illness on August 19, 2024. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 19 years, and companion of 22 years, Merline P. Moore-Gall; her daughter, Deirdre Watson; her son-in-law, Ruben Bernard Watson; step-granddaughters: Diane Peace, Kimberly Gutherie, and Shaundrae Guthrie; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Allen and Patricia Sharp; brother-in-law, James Allen, many nieces, nephews, church family, neighbors and friends.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate his life will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 7 at Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 549 Clarissa Street, Rochester, NY. Interment at the convenience of the family. Repass will immediately follow the service.
