From Our Former Neighbor: Melisa Dickinson
Jesse,
We moved to Maxon Street, next to Jesse and Lyn in September of 1995. This began our journey of being neighbors, to friends, to Family.
Jesse loved being outdoors. Many Saturday mornings he’d be outside at the picnic table. All three of my kids would find their way there to hang out, talk, or play cards.
Fishing was another Love he had. Countless times he’d invite the kids to go fishing at Arrowhead. He and Lyn welcomed their fishing buddies!
We could always count on Jess to attend baseball, softball or football games to see the kids play.
Birthday parties and graduations were no different. He enjoyed the snacks, fun times and especially the Desserts!
Jesse loved getting any kind of cookies or cakes brought over to him. He’d even request favorites like lemon cake.
He was so good with the kids. He helped out in the morning on many occasions. Providing candy and poker games before school. There was also the occasional drive to school because the bus was missed. Too much fun and not enough paying attention to time!
Jesse wasn’t only a wonderful additional family member to the kids but also to me. He was always supportive, encouraging and always ready to help in any way he could.
Jesse, You will be missed more than you’ll ever know.
You would never say Goodbye whether it was on the phone or in person. It was always “Later”.
So Jesse, this is not goodbye…but Later
Love, Melisa
P.S. (From Lyn) Jesse always greeted Melisa with "Hello Beautiful!"

Dear Papa Jess,
Thank you for being the best grandfather I could’ve ever asked for. Thank you for the endless laughs
brought on by the crazy stories of your childhood and workplaces. Thank you for your notorious jokes
and one liners like “I’m not black I’m pecan tan.” You had the funniest expressions. I’m smiling right now
just thinking about the look you would give me when you would take a sip of water and realize it wasn’t
sweet. You would peer at me over your glasses and say “uh Riss, where’s the sugar?” To which I would
reply “you don’t need sugar, its water!” And I’ll never forget the annoyed looks you would give me when
you were in the hospital sharing a room with that strange man because he was snoring so loudly 24-7. I
will miss you every day. I’ll miss our Grandpa Sam’s dinners, how cute you looked without your
dentures, your frustrated head scratches, how crazy you thought I was for always drinking a Dunkin iced
coffee, the shocked look on your face when we would Uber Eats food because you couldn’t believe that
someone actually brought it to the door and so much more. Even you just calling out “hey Riss” when
you needed something. Thank you for giving myself, my friends and our family the best memories. And
since you hated goodbyes, this is not goodbye but later. I love you.
XOXO,
Marissa (Riss)

To Jesse from Lyn - I love you and miss you so much!
"He is Gone"
You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
Or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he has gone,
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
Be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what he'd want: smile,
Open your eyes, love and go on.

This tribute was read by Jillian Wojtowicz; a lifelong friend of Jesse and Lyn:
Jesse, was a wonderful man and I consider it an honor to have called him my friend.
I first met Jesse over twenty years ago. At the time I was just beginning my career as a Licensed Massage Therapist. I often participated in community events to help grow my business.
On a cold winter day around this time of year, I had finished three hours of chair massage at a health fair held at Brockport College. As I began to walk through the visitor lot toward my car, I noticed a vehicle slow down in front of me. A man got out and asked if he could help me. I knew by the truck that he was a campus employee so, I gratefully accepted. He loaded my massage chair into the back and invited me into the warm cab of the truck. The man held out his hand and happily introduced himself. “I’m Jesse Read”, he said, “Read like the book!” I laughed and we chatted on our way to my car. I thanked him and gave him one of my business cards. Little did I know that day that I had just met my most loyal massage client but, more importantly I had begun a friendship that would last decades.
Over the years that followed, Jesse would come to my place of business for his weekly massage. The work truly helped him so much and he was grateful and generous. We spent hours talking about our interests, our families, and just everyday stuff. Jesse was proud of all of the achievements he made in his life. He always shared his stories in a humorous, genuine, and endearing way.
Jesse’s greatest accomplishment was surely his family. He spoke often of Lyn, his children, and grandchildren. He reminisced of tales about his childhood, his mother, and his brothers and sisters.
Several years ago, when Jesse stopped driving, I began going to his and Lyn’s home on Maxon Street. Tuesdays were our day. We both looked forward to it every week. During that time I enjoyed becoming closer friends with Lyn. She has always been unconditionally supportive and encouraging of the time that Jesse and I spent together. We will continue this special friendship, thanks to Jesse.
Thank you for allowing me to share some of my memories and love for such an unforgettable person.
And to Jesse:
May you forever feel loose like a long neck goose, and always feel good like Garson & Wood, and I know how much you hate goodbyes so, until we meet again- Later Jesse❤️

"Leaves" (a poem read at the funeral by Jesse's sister, Miriam Roberts)
Come little leaves said the wind one day
Come over the meadow with me and play
Put on your coat of red and gold
For the summer is gone and the days growing cold
As soon as the leaves heard the wind's loud call
Down they came fluttering one and all
Over the brown fields they danced and flew
Singing the gay songs they knew
Soon they were all nested in their beds
While a blanket of snow laid over their heads.
