ROCHESTER, NY – January 11, 2024
Carolyne Elizabeth Scott Blount, of Rochester, New York, went home to be with the Lord on January 11, 2024 after a long illness. Carolyne was born on March 21, 1943, to the late Earl E. Scott Sr. and Callie Elizabeth Brown Scott of Ruthville, Virginia and grew up with her late older brother, Earl E. Scott Jr. Carolyne accepted the Lord at an early age at Elam Baptist Church in Ruthville. After High School, she earned a Bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University and Master’s degree from Drexel University.
In 1961, she met her beloved late husband and partner in life and business, James “Jim” M. Blount from Smithfield, Virginia. In 1966, they moved to New York State, where they welcomed three children into the world, James Ural, Christina Elizabeth, and Cheryl Ellen and raised their children at Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Rochester, NY.
In 1972, Carolyne and Jim took over ABOUT…TIME Magazine Inc., which she led as its Executive Editor and Co-Publisher for over 50 years. It focuses on African-American life and culture around Rochester, the United States, and the world, and is one of the oldest African-American continuous publications in the country. Her efforts illuminated little-known stories about the African-American experience, and established a foundation for literary and journalistic research.
Carolyne was a dedicated member of the Delta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and served the sorority for nearly 61 years. Additionally, she served in many community organizations, and was recognized widely for her journalistic and cultural work.
Carolyne is survived by her three children, James Ural Blount (Juanita Farrow), Christina (Michael) West, and Cheryl (Christian) Gilbert; eight grandchildren, Brandon James Blount, Justin Jural Blount, Cassandra Elizabeth West, Alese Nicole Blount, Michael Scott West, Catherine Elizabeth West, Chase Maurice Gilbert, and Cameron James Gilbert; three siblings-in-law, Walter L. Blount Jr., Catherine Irene Joyce Blount, and Bernadette Blount (John) Salley; two nieces, Conici Blount and Anita Nicole Salley; one nephew, Jonathan Joseph Walter Salley; cousins and countless extended family, Sorority sisters, and hometown and local friends who will forever revere the love shared with her.
