Please share a memory of Ether to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROCHESTER, NY – May 11, 2023
Mrs. Ether M. Scott was born on May 17, 1936 to the union of late Alex Singletary and Lerline (Baby) Brown in Williamsburg county, South Carolina. She was one of eleven children (predeceased by nine).
Ether’s commitment to family can be seen as early as eight years old when she helped her mother care for her siblings. Ether’s love for family grew with the birth of each of her children. The first of which, prompted her journey from Kingstree South Carolina to Rochester New York where she met her beloved husband of 61 years, Sam L. Scott. In there home of 55 yrs, they raised their four children and even some grandchildren. Their home became a legacy home where many family and friends found love and support over the years.
Ether was a hard worker from an early age and that work ethic afforded her many professional and personal accomplishments throughout her life. From her first major job in the Genesee Hospital to her last at General Motors where she retired after 23 years.
When Ether found her way to Rochester, she also found her forever church family at the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Ether was among the few original members and remained steadfast in her devotion throughout her life.
Ether was strong, independent, fierce, and above all devoted to family. She was one who always took pride in her presence, from her well coordinated outfits to the confidence she exuded walking into a room. Over the years she naturally became the matriarch of her family. She and her husband became the strong foundation for their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. There was nothing she could not do once she put her mind to it, whether it be sports, music, cooking, African American history, or the arts; she excelled in everything she did.
Ether passed away on May 11, 2023 at the age of 86. She is predeceased by one son, Jerome Scott. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Sam L. Scott; one son, Tracy Scott (Mary); two daughters, Dinah Smith and Verna Singletary; one sister, Frances Singletary; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; and many relatives, church family, and friends.
