ROCHESTER, NY – April 13, 2023
Alice H. Smith was born on September 19, 1930 in Columbus, MS. Alice was the fourth child of the late Lennie M. Harrison, Sr. and Mary Glenn Harrison. She was a loving child that grew up in a Christian home. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized, thereafter joined the Providence Baptist Church. The earthly life of Alice H. Smith came to an end on Thursday, April 13, 2023, as God whispered, "Well done my good and faithful servant!"
Alice grew up in the city of Columbus. As an active member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church for many years, she was a true servant of God. She served as a delegate to the Women's Conference, Baptist Church Conventions, and other church affiliate programs. With her melodious voice, she enjoyed singing. She was a member of Providence Mass Choir, member of the Missionary Society, where she served as secretary for more than 35 years, served as programs committee chairperson, a member of the Women's Ministry, and attended Bible Study and Sunday School.
Not only did Alice serve in the church that she loved, she was also an active member of the Queen of Sheba Eastern Star Lodge # 431 of Columbus, Mississippi. Alice had a true love for music and singing. You were often able to hear her singing while cooking or outside doing yard work. She was a proud member of the City-Wide Chorus of Columbus for many years and enjoyed traveling to sing with this joyful group.
Alice attended school in the Lowndes County Public School System. Alice was a talented seamstress and later employed at Seminole Manufacturing Company for twenty-one and half years until retirement.
Alice enjoyed working in her yard planting, weeding, and caring for her beautiful flowers and vegetable garden. She was a great cook, cooking cakes of all kinds. Her family and friends will remember the rainbow of cakes, pies and desserts she always prepared for holidays.
Alice was united in holy matrimony to the late Walter J. Smith. From this marriage, two children were born: Thomasene Smith Moorehead and the late Frank J. Smith. Alice was a noble and loving mother that gave her all to raise her children. She taught them how to love each other, be respectable, kind to all and live a Christian life. She also took special pride in the children her family entrusted her to help raise, her nephews, the late Henry Bonner, Thomas Bonner, Charles Davis, and his son Quatres Darnell McBride, sharing her love for family and the Lord with them. Alice was blessed to live her last years with her daughter and son-in-law in Rochester, NY. She learned to enjoy looking at the snow and saying, “Are you going out in all that snow?” Their reply with a smile was “We are used to it.”
Alice was a dedicated and devoted aunt that would give unselfishly to help her family. She always made time for her nieces and nephews and loved them as if they were her own children.
Alice's favorite passage of scripture is "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Philippians 4:13. Alice was called to leave this earthy home to her heavenly home of eternal joy on April 13th, 2023. She was preceded in death by her devoted son, Frank J. Smith; loving parents, Lennie and Mary Harrison, brother, Lennie M. Harrison, II; sisters, Rosetta H. Johnson, Elizabeth Bonner, Lucille Tyler, and Mary L. Haynes. Alice leaves to cherish her fond memories sister, Evelena Jordan, Omaha, NE; brother, Joseph Harrison, Manchester, MO; a beloved daughter, Thomasene (Ossie, a loving Son-In-Law) Moorehead of Rochester, NY, Grandchildren, Creighton Moorehead, Washington, DC; Chandra Moorehead, Rochester, NY, Felicia Vance, Columbus, MS, Daughter In-Law, Emma N.
