Obituary of Melvin L. McDowell

ROCHESTER, NY – January 31, 2023 Melvin Leonard McDowell was the fourth child born to Jessie and Lucious McDowell. He was born August 24, 1944, at Harlem Hospital in Bronx, New York. Melvin attended PS3 Elementary School in the Bronx. His family moved to Rochester, New York in 1953, where he attended PS Elementary School. Melvin graduated from Madison High School in 1962. He excelled in the sport of wrestling. One of his most notable accomplishments was winning the City Championship in his senior year. Melvin relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio in 2001. He pursued and received his CDL license and began employment as an Operator for the Sorta/Metro/Transit Company from November 26, 2001 until April 15, 2015. He was well-liked among the other drivers and his passengers, alike. He always shared humorous stories and anecdotes with everyone he met. While residing in Ohio, he was an active member at Quinn Chapel African Methodist Church in Forest Park, Ohio. Melvin retired in 2015 to return to Rochester, New York to help care for his mother. Upon his return, he became employed with Medical Motor Service of Rochester until his illness made it impossible for him to continue. He was medically and compassionately well cared for by the staff at Highland Hospital Medical Oncology Department until his death. On January 30, 2023, Melvin transitioned his earthly life. He leaves to cherish his memory: his brother, Clarence (Claudia) McDowell; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Dot) McDowell; nieces and nephews: Kelly McDowell, Janice McDowell Johnson, Pamela McDowell Likely, James McDowell Jr., Troy McDowell, Tyrone McDowell, Timothy McDowell, Bart Shuler, and Charlene McDowell, Taralyn and the late Mark McDowell and their families; several cousins, extended family, friends and co-workers. The joy, laughter and love Melvin gave will be sorely missed. Friends may call Saturday, February 18 from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM at The Latimer Chapel, 983 S. Plymouth Ave., Rochester, NY.
