Thomasina Childress, age 96, died Thursday, March 31, 2011 in, Rochester. Mrs. Childress was born May 6, 1914 in Edgefield, SC the daughter of the late Clarence and the late Martha (Nero) Brown. Predeceased by her husband, Herbert A. Childress in 1968. Thomasina, profoundly deaf, communicated using American Sign Language. She was one of the first African American teachers at the North Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. An accomplished tailor, she enjoyed fashion, especially wearing hats. Thomasina, a devout Jeovah's witness truly loved her faith. She is survived by her daughters, Maxine Childress Brown, Shirley Childress Saxton, and Dr. Khaula Murtadha; son-in-law, James Brown; 12 grand and 10 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives church family and friends. Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery.
