ROCHESTER, NY – June 15, 2021 Estella Norwood Evans, of Pittsford, NY, passed away on June 15, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on March 10, 1950 in Blytheville, Arkansas. She attended the public schools in Detroit, Michigan and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. She also earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Connecticut and a Doctor of Social Work degree from Yeshiva University in New York City. In 1970 she married James H. Evans, Jr. and together they had three children, James H. Evans III, Jamila H. (Evans) Rogers and Jumaane H. Evans. Dr. Norwood Evans taught at Hunter College in New York, SUNY Brockport and Nazareth College. She received numerous honors and recognitions for her service to the field of social work education. Dr. Norwood Evans was an active member of the Delta Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. Norwood Evans is survived by her three children and four grandchildren, Christian James Evans, Jayla Symone Rogers, Jadyn Valentina Rogers and Josiah Beau Robinson, as well as a sister, Valerie Norwood Nicholson, and a brother Ozzie Norwood Jr.; other relatives, church family and friends. Alpha Kappa Alpha "Ivy Beyond the Wall" Ceremony and Community Funeral Service to Celebrate her Life will be held 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 10 at Nazareth College Linehan Chapel 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, NY. Entombment White Haven Memorial Park, Pittsford, NY.
