Obituary of Walter Henry Lloyd
Please share a memory of Walter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROCHESTER, NY – February 10, 2025
Elder Walter Henry Lloyd was born May 9, 1948 in Georgetown, SC. He is the son of the late Henry “Po Boy” Lloyd & Lena Belle "Ruffin" Lloyd. He was the next oldest of eight children.
Elder Lloyd had a strong work ethic which was instilled in him as a young boy by his father. He held various jobs as a teen in South Carolina and graduated from Howard High School 1967. He relocated to Rochester in 1969 and worked at Beechnut Baby Foods, Kodak, Wegmans and his last position was that of a driver for Blue Bird Bus Company.
After relocating to Rochester, Elder Lloyd became a member of Greater Bethlehem Temple Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Samuel I. Rumph, Sr. In 1970 he received the Holy Ghost and in 1974 he was called into the ministry. Elder Lloyd later moved his membership to Zion Temple where the late Shelton Doucette was the pastor. After a period of time, Elder Lloyd joined True Church of Christ where the late Ruth Lewis was the pastor. At Pastor Lewis’ recommendation he was ordained as an Elder in 1988 by the Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith, International (PCAFI).
In 1997 Elder Lloyd moved his membership to Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church under the leadership of Bishop Clarence J. Turner. Under Bishop Turner’s leadership and par excellence Bible teaching, Elder Lloyd gained a higher level of knowledge and understanding of God’s word.
He married the former Rosa Marie Jones in May 1988 and would have celebrated 37 years of marriage as of May 7th. Although no children were born to this union, Elder Lloyd and Rosa enjoyed spending time with other people’s children. He got great joy from the friendship of the children in the church he lovingly called “his little buddies” and they referred to him as “the Candyman” because he always had candy or other goodies for them.
Elder Lloyd enjoyed reading the Bible and those that know Elder Lloyd know how much he loved listening to and singing gospel quartet songs. He was a former member of the Gospel Tones quartet and the Jubilee Singers quartet in South Carolina. Among his favorite gospel groups were the Blind Boys of Mississippi and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. The Blind Boys’ song “Sending Up My Timber” became one of Elder Lloyd’s favorite songs and he would sing it at church services, funerals and wherever there was an occasion for him to sing. Elder Lloyd believed in giving his best to the Lord and whenever he would sing, he would sing with joy, enthusiasm and lots of energy and in doing this “Sending Up My Timber” became the song that people knew him for. Another one of his signature songs is “Someone Who Cares”.
Throughout his life, Elder Lloyd was extremely active in the church. He did whatever his hands could find to do and often applied his energies behind the scenes in various ways. In addition to being a minister, Elder Lloyd also held various other positions which included Sunday School Superintendent, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, church transportation driver, Sunday School teacher, Usher, Brotherhood Chairman, Sunday morning service Chaplain and other responsibilities.
Elder Lloyd was very supportive of the New York, Pennsylvania and New England States (NYPANE) Council. He was very active in the Council and held several positions including Assistant Chairman of the Minister’s Alliance for 16 years, Sunday School Superintendent, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Council Field Worker, and the Sound System Technician. During the LADWEC (Labor Day Weekend Convention) services there were occasions where he led the devotionals, worked security, assisted with the offerings and helped wherever needed.
Elder Lloyd’s favorite scripture was Philippians 4:4-9.
A hearty laugh and his sense of humor were Elder Lloyd’s trademarks. They will be greatly missed!
At home with his loving wife, Elder Walter H. Lloyd entered into eternal rest Monday, February 10, 2025. Elder Lloyd’s parents, Henry and Lena Belle Lloyd and sisters, Eva Mae Lloyd, Gladys Lloyd, Patricia Lloyd and Mary Doiley, all predeceased him in death.
