Q: How would you describe Joan to someone who had never met them? A: Joan I’ve known since I was a teenager. She was a special friend of my family, Ms. Emma R. Jarrett Pickett. She was a friend, & an advisor to me especially when I was accepted at Howard University. It took me a while to complete Howard but with my mother and Joan’s encouragement I finally graduated in 1970. Those two women helped me get through. When I was a new teacher at # 20 School & was having difficulty with classroom management, I was given the opportunity to observe Joan for a morning. She was a true master teacher & just those few hours enabled me to turn things around. I've always admired Joan's quiet dignity & kindness. Through the years, I've thought of her as a model for my own conduct.
